China, Russia to Join the
Generation IV International Forum (GIF)
Two join group of leading nuclear nations pursuing advanced reactors for future U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Dennis Spurgeon announced, on July 13, 2006, that China and Russia are expected to join the GIF, a group of the world's leading nuclear nations who are working together to develop more efficient and less waste-intensive advanced reactors to meet future energy challenges. Earlier today, the GIF Policy Group voted unanimously to extend an offer of membership to China and Russia. China and Russia's formal entry into GIF is expected to be finalized by November 2006. more>

Dr. Bouchard succeeds Shane Johnson, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy of the U.S. (16th from the left) as chairman of the soon-to-be 12 nation group dedicated to developing advanced nuclear reactors. Attendees from the GIF's 12 nations are pictured here at the recent Policy Group meeting, where it was announced that Russia and China will be joining GIF.
