Generation IV Program Accomplishments
FY 2006 Planned Activities:
- Complete the fabrication of the multi-cell TRISO-fuel test capsule and be ready to insert in the Advanced Test Reactor.
- Issue a Request for Proposals via the Idaho National Laboratory for pre-conceptual design of the Next Generation Nuclear Plant.
- Fabricate and inspect test specimens for the AGC-l graphite creep test and document the results.
- Issue report on initial scoping, testing and characterization of high temperature metallic alloys (CMS Alloy 617 and Alloy 230).
- Issue limited release of the “Generation TV Materials Handbook” for beta evaluation.
FY 2005 Accomplishments:
- Initiated university R&D activities directed toward Generation IV reactor development.
- Initiated VHTR materials testing.
- Demonstrated the fabrication of advanced Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor uranium nitride fuel.
- Participated in the development of research and development plans for various Generation IV reactor concepts.
FY 2004 Accomplishments:
- Completed the independent technical review of VHTR technologies.
- Held public meetings on a proposed strategy for developing a nuclear hydrogen production capability.
- Developed high temperature fuel particles and compacts including quality control approaches.
- Received approval of the mission need for demonstrating commercial nuclear hydrogen production technology.
- Completed plans for high-temperature materials irradiation testing.
- Completed the design concept of a 20 Megawatt Lead-Cooled Fast Reactor with a 20-year core life.
