At this site, the Office of Laboratory Facilities Management funds facilities to support isotope production and other missions.
The Brookhaven Linear Isotope Producer (BLIP) Building 931,
and Hot Cell Building 801 at BNL are used for producing, processing and packaging radioisotopes such as strontium-82, germanium-68, copper-67,
and others that are used in medical applications. In addition, the Department is analyzing the acquisition options for a 70 MeV cyclotron for
dedicated isotope production. The new cyclotron could replace the aging Brookhaven Linear Isotope Producer (BLIP) which now only operates a
few weeks per year, and thus is unable to contribute effectively to a year-round supply of short-lived isotopes. The cyclotron and IPF at LANL
could supply the projected year-round need for short-lived accelerator-produced isotopes for the next twenty years. |
